Key Components
To successfully complete an IMA qualification in Make-up Application Certifcate, Fashion, Photographic & Media Make-up Diploma and Hair Dressing Diploma, students must meet the following criteria:
Attendance: Minimum of 80% of teaching time.
Practical Skills Documentation: Evidence of completed make-up and hair styling variations recorded on 'Face/Hair Sheets', signed by a teacher, with 'before and after' photographic proof.
Portfolio Submission: A well-structured portfolio following the prescribed index, including all coursework and written projects.
External Coursework: Completion of assignments such as a work log, researched make-up/hair kit, and a written project within a month of course completion.
Understanding 'Variations'
'Variations' represent different styles, techniques, and client characteristics (e.g., skin tones, face shapes). Each variation must be documented with a ‘face/hair sheet’ and photographic evidence. These ensure comprehensive training and competency in real-world applications.
Documentation & Assessment of Practical Work
All practical work must be meticulously recorded on IMA 'Face Sheets' and 'Hair Sheets', detailing techniques and products used. Each entry requires a teacher’s signature and must be accompanied by 'before and after' photos. Portfolios are assessed by an external examiner who verifies documentation and practical skills.
Theoretical Coursework Requirements
Students must complete:
Work Log: A daily factual summary of class activities such as personal observations.
Make-up & Hair Kit Research: Detailed research and pricing of professional products.
Written Project: A project on a teacher-assigned topic, with properly cited sources.
Practical Examinations
External practical examinations require students to create both a ‘day’ and an ‘evening’ make-up look within a strict time frame. The assessment criteria include hygiene, model preparation, make-up application, and final presentation. A minimum score of 80% is required to pass. A theory exam consisting of multiple-choice questions must also be passed with at least 80% for only Make-up Application Certifcates.
Role of the External Examiner
The External Examiner is an independent industry professional responsible for assessing student portfolios, theory paper results, and practical examinations. Their decision is final, though appeals can be made via the teacher.
IMA Accreditation Requirements for Schools
New schools must provide details about premises, staff qualifications, and investment plans. Existing schools must submit trading figures and staff credentials. An initial assessment meeting determines accreditation. Schools must pay an accreditation fee, maintain annual membership, and adhere to IMA guidelines.
IMA Support for Students & Schools
The IMA offers:
Comprehensive Course Materials: Including workbooks, face/hair sheets, portfolio index pages, and test papers.
Administrative & Technical Support: CRM system and head office assistance.
Standards & Guidelines: Ensuring hygiene, safety, and quality of training.
